When a coral is stressed by heat, light shock, poor water quality, salinity swings, or other environmental stressors, the relationship between coral and zooxanthellae breaks down. The coral’s tissue turns pale, white, gray, or washed out as the symbiotic algae population collapses or is expelled.

Bleaching does not automatically mean the coral is dead — and that’s important to understand. A bleached coral can recover if the stressor is removed quickly and stable conditions return. How to Prevent Coral Bleaching From Heat Stress

A single daily glance at your thermometer is not sufficient during summer. Use a controller, smart probe, or Bluetooth thermometer that logs temperature throughout the day so you can identify whether spikes are occurring during lighting hours, peak room heat, or overnight.

If you notice bleaching signs — pale color, white patches, retracted polyps, or tissue pulling away from the skeleton — act immediately but carefully:

  1. Reduce temperature gradually. Lower tank temp by no more than 1°F–2°F per hour to avoid thermal shock in the opposite direction.
  2. Reduce lighting intensity. A bleached coral has lost its photosynthetic partner and cannot process the same light load it once could. Dialing back intensity reduces additional stress while it recovers.
  3. Maintain pristine water quality. Elevated nutrients and nitrates add to coral stress. Perform a modest water change, check your skimmer, and verify alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium are in range.
  4. Do not move stressed corals unless necessary. Placement changes during a recovery period add additional stress. Keep them in moderate flow and indirect light.
  5. Be patient and consistent. Recovery can take weeks. Stable, optimal conditions are more valuable than any supplement or additive during this period.
